The Manchester Monarchs and Portland Pirates have shared a rivalry since Manchester joined the American Hockey League in 2001. Portland won the first ever match-up, 4-3, on October 18, 2001. Since then, the Atlantic Division rivals have battled for dominance over the other with many memorable games.
Entering the 2013-14 season, the Monarchs have won 63 times and the Pirates have won 57 games with seven victories last season to capture the inaugural VIP Cup. In their only post-season match-up, Manchester swept Portland, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.
